Sensible au roman Qu’elle était verte ma vallée de Richard Llewellyn - qui a donné le film américain de John Ford (1941) -, il se rend au pays de Galles pour témoigner de la vie des mineurs. Dans ces chroniques traversées par le rapport de classe, naissent les germes de son esthétique : le reportage pensé comme séquence, des cadrages sensibles et faussement approximatifs et le noir et blanc utilisé comme base d’une poésie mystérieuse et expressionniste. «J’ai toujours eu de la sympathie pour les perdants», disait Robert Frank. L’humain au naturel devant son objectif, il abandonne la mode pour le photojournalisme, avec l’ambition d’être un artiste à l’appareil photo «malin», comme il le confie à la revue U.S Camera, différent des autres, avec une identité et des idées personnelles.
