Rembrandt - Portrait D'Hendrickje Stoffels

Rembrandt 1606-1609

When Rembrandt painted this very intimate portrait of his lover Hendrickje Stoffels (link ), she was in trouble with the church. The Protestant church in Amsterdam denounced her as a loose woman for living with Rembrandt without being married. In this painting, he declares the depth of his love. It is at once sensual – wearing just a fur round her shoulders, she seems ready for bed – and soulful. It is truly an act of love, this hymn to Hendrickje’s inner and outer beauty.

This is an intimate moment in Rembrandt’s life with Hendrickje Stoffels. She became his mistress after the death of his wife Saskia( 1642), but Rembrandt could not remarry because it would jeopardise his inheritance from Saskia. He needed the money because his finances were a mess. When Rembrandt (who lavished cash on costumes for his portraits, curiosities for his collection and a fine house) went bankrupt, Hendrickje became his business representative.

Titien - la vénus d'Urbino

Titien 1488-1576

An agent for the Duke of Ferrara once wrote a letter – which survives – reporting to his master on the great Venetian painter Titian. Titian’s health is fine, he says, but he gets exhausted because he paints women in various poses then has sex with them. This rare glimpse of Titian’s studio life illuminates his nudes, which are painted from life and show his lust for beauty.

Mozart - Messe en ut mineur - K 427

Mozart 1756-1791

James Gillray - The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street in Danger

James Gillray 1757-1815

The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street in Danger by James Gillray

The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street in Danger by James Gillray
 22 May 1797
You may know The Bank of England as The Old Lady, a name which was coined in a 1797 cartoon by James Gillray entitled Political Ravishment or The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street in Danger.
It attacks Prime Minister William Pitt The Younger and makes the suggestion that he has misused his power to get his hands on the bank’s reserves.

William Hogarth. Mary Edwards. 1742.
Oil on canvas
The Frick Collection, New York, USA.

Mary Edwards (1705–43), one of the richest women of her time, repudiated her marriage to an extravagant husband, although this was tantamount to declaring her son illegitimate.
She was Hogarth’s friend and arguably his most significant patron during the decade 1733–43. The monumental portrait of Miss Edwards, wearing magnificent jewels and a striking red dress, is a masterpiece in the series of Hogarth’s commanding middle-class portraits, which includes the famous Captain Coram. The open scroll prominently displayed beside the subject champions the virtues of liberty and property that she would have appreciated as manager of a great fortune.

Perilous Question by Antonia Fraser

Perilous Question by Antonia Fraser

The House of Commons, 1833
by Sir George Hayter
oil on canvas, 1833-1843
213 3/8 in. x 136 1/4 in. x 5 3/8 in. (5420 mm x 3460 mm x 135 mm)

National Portrait Gallery in London

Reform Act 1832

The Act increased the electorate from 478,000 to 813,000 out of a total population of 24 million; industrial cities such as Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool received MPs, many for the first time; half the MPs who sat for rotten boroughs lost their seats (though 73 still remained), yet the size of the Commons remained at 658, the same as we have today. The Act extended the vote from the upper and upper-middle to the middle classes, and it was not until 1867 that it was further extended to the lower-middle classes, and in 1884 to the working classes. Finally, women were brought into the bosom of the constitution in recognition of their work in the Great War.
