Francois Boucher - A Lady on Her Day Bed

A Lady on Her Day Bed , 1743
oil on canvas
22 1/2 in. x 26 7/8 in. (57.15 cm x 68.26 cm)
Purchased by The Frick Collection, 1937.

When Marie-Jeanne Buzeau (1716–after 1786) posed so pertly for this informal portrait ten years after her marriage to Boucher, she was twenty-seven and the mother of three children. She frequently served as model for her husband, and in later life she painted miniature reproductions of his more popular pictures and made engravings after his drawings. Besides offering such a candid image of the artist’s wife, the portrait provides a fascinating glimpse of a room in the apartment to which Boucher had moved the year before he signed this canvas on the rue de Grenelle-Saint-Honoré. The porcelain figurine and tea service on the hanging étagère reflect Boucher’s taste for the Oriental bric-a-brac so fashionable throughout the eighteenth century. In its composition the portrait is a witty parody of the classical Renaissance depictions of Venus by Giorgione and Titian, and as such the picture has acquired the sobriquet “Boucher's Untidy Venus.”

Johannes Brams - le chant du destin - Schicksalslied

Johannes Brams 1833-1897

le chant du destin - Schicksalslied - Song of Destiny

Ye move up yonder in light,
On airy ground, o blessed spirits!
Radiant winds ethereal
O'er you play light,
As the fingers inspired that wake
Heavenly lyre-chords.

Free from Fate, like the slumbering
Suckling, breathe the immortals.
Pure, unsullied,
In bud that enfolds
It blooms for aye,
The flower of their spirit.
And the eyes of the blessed
Gaze in tranquil
Brightness eternal.

But to us is it given
In no abidding place to dwell;
We vanish, we stumble,
We suffering, sorrowing mortals
Blindly from one
Brief hour to another,
Like water from boulder
To boulder flung downward,
Year by year to the dark Unknown below.

Ihr wandelt droben im Licht,
Auf weichem Boden, selige Genien!
Glänzende Götterlüfte
Rühren euch leicht,
Wie die Finger der Künstlerin
Heilige Saiten.

Schicksallos, wie der schlafende
Säugling, atmen die Himmlischen;
Keusch bewahrt
In bescheidener Knospe
Blühet ewig
Ihnen der Geist,
Und die seligen Augen
Blicken in stiller,
Ewiger Klarheit.

Doch uns ist gegeben
Auf keiner Stätte zu ruhn;
Es schwinden, es fallen
Die leidenden Menschen
Blindlings von einer
Stunde zur andern,
Wie Wasser von Klippe
zu Klippe geworfen,
Jahrlang ins Ungewisse hinab.

Matisse's Bathers by a River

Henri Matisse, Baigneuses à la rivière

 Henri Matisse, Baigneuses à la rivière, 1909-10, 1913, 1916-1917,
huile sur toile, 260 x 392 cm (The Art Institute of Chicago)
Bathers by a River is one of Matisse's largest paintings. Matisse produced three variations on the theme of the female nude in a pastoral setting, including Dance II and Music. With its restricted palette and severely abstracted forms—the rigid, predominantly gray figures appear more like stone than flesh. Bathers by a River is far removed from Dance II and Music, both of which convey a graceful, hedonistic lyricism. The sobriety and hint of danger in Bathers by a River may in part reflect the artist's reaction to the terrible, war-torn period during which he completed it.

The Beatles - Norwegian Wood

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Wood_%28This_Bird_Has_Flown%29

I once had a girl, or should i say, she once had me.

She showed me her room, isn't it good, norwegian wood?

She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,

So i looked around and i noticed there wasn't a chair.

I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine.

We talked until two and then she said, "it's time for bed".

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.

I told her i didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath.

And when i awoke i was alone, this bird had flown.

So i lit a fire, isn't it good, norwegian wood.
