Provenance
The previous owner of the Rake's Progress
series was William Beckford of Fonthill who bought them at Hogarth's
auction in 1745. The paintings were originally produced by Hogarth as
preparatory works for engravings published in 1735. Buyers could see the
paintings before deciding to subscribe to a set of engravings. Soane purchased the series from the sale of the contents of Fonthill Splendens at Christie's, 1802.
