The inspiration for Constables painting was nature itself, for there is art,

 he proclaimed, "beneath every hedge and on every meadow."

 This view of his fathers garden attests to his striving for maximum accuracy 

in the depiction of nature as well as his profound attachment to the geography of his childhood.

Pour cette toile, Hopper dit s’être inspiré d’un restaurant de Greenwich Village où il habitait jusqu’à sa mort, d’un tableau de Van Gogh (Café de nuit, 1888), des films noirs et surtout d’une nouvelle d’Hemingway, The Killers, récit sur fond d’assassinat d’un boxeur qui fut portée à l’écran par Robert Siodmak (avec Burt Lancaster et Ava Gardner, en 1946). Le cinéma a constamment rendu hommage à Hopper qui lui-même était un grand cinéphile : "Quand je n’arrivais pas à peindre, j’allais voir des films pendant une semaine ou davantage". Pour certains décors de The Killers, Robert Siodmak s’est directement inspiré de plusieurs tableaux de Hopper. Plus tard, Wim Wenders dans La Fin de la violencereproduira les composantes de cette toile (le bar, le point de vue, les accessoires et la femme à la jupe rouge).
